System Requirements

CAIRO is a client-server system.

There are three major software components:

Workstation Software The Client for Working at School
Server Software The Database: Holds all the Data
Work-At-Home Setup CAIRO for Working at Home

Server Requirements

Supported Server Operating Systems

The database engine used by CAIRO is compatible with the following versions of the Windows Server Operating System:

Windows Server 2000 (with Service Pack 4)
Windows Server 2003 (with Service Pack 2 or later)

Database Server Software

CAIRO uses an industrial-strength database engine to hold the report data. This is the same family of software that is used by leading software houses in the education sector. CAIRO is fully compatible with both of the major relases of this system:

Database Engine Software:

Microsoft SQL 2005 Standard Edition This is preferred because:
- improvements to and simplification of administrative processes
- better performance
- CAIRO will be migrating to SQL Reporting Services at a later stage and this is already supported under version 2005
Microsoft SQL 2000 Standard Edition This is the same database engine currently used by products such as Phoenix, Hebron and SIMS.

SDS does not supply Microsoft SQL Server because we cannot obtain the huge discounts available to education establishments. Under typical Microsoft licencing agreements for schools, purchase of a licence to use SQL Server costs about £100.
