Enabling WebDAV
How to Enable the Windows Web Client
You can use a simple and widely-available technology to upload files to SDS. You will need Internet Explorer version 5 or higher.
How to Enable WebDAV on Your PC
For this operation you need to be logged on as an administrator or as a power user. Windows XP has a built-in WebDAV client that does not need to be installed, only enabled. (I have found that, in spite of documentation to the contrary, this service is often already enabled.) To enable WebDAV on XP, or to see if it is already running, do the following:
- Open the Windows XP Control Panel
- Select the Administrative Tools icon
- In Administrative Tools, select Services. (Image 1)
Checking the WebDAV Service
Here is how to see if the WebDAV service is already running on your PC.
- In the list of Services, scroll down to Web Client (Image 2). WebClient is the service that provides WebDAV functionality.
- Double-click on the WebClient entry in the Services list. A configuration and properties dialog is displayed. (Image 3)
- Check the Status and Startup Type columns for the WebClient service. If they are Started and Automatic respectively then there is nothing more to do to configure the service and you can skip the next section.
Enabling the WebDAV Service
- In the Startup Type list of choices, select Automatic
- Click on the Start button.
- After a few moments, check the Service Status to confirm that the service is running. (Image 4)
Having changed the Startup Type to Automatic, this service will automatically start each time Windows starts. Having done this once, you should not have to reconfigure the WebClient service again on this workstation.
If the service fails to start, you may not have sufficient user rights. If this is not the issue, contact SDS for further assistance.
